Having long enjoyed Alexander McCall Smith’s Botswana series about the Lady Detectives, I read with anticipation one of his Edinburgh series about the inquisitive Isabel Dalhousie, well-to-do middle-aged single mother with a young lover.
Her experiences with a new baby and his father, formerly the rejected boyfriend of a still-jealous niece, are as interesting as her investigation into the mysterious origins of a seemingly new painting by a reputedly dead artist. As always, Smith sews up all the loose threads into satisfying outcomes.
And the Scottish scenes are evocative of our memories of a three-week walking vacation there.
